Shakira Hines, Summit High School Senior, class of 2012, was recognized by the Summit Area YMCA as Youth of the Year at the Y’s Annual Celebration on Tuesday, June 5, at Reeves-Reed Arboretum. This award was instituted by the Summit Area YMCA in 1999 to recognize an outstanding youth in our Y community. Shakira’s leadership in the community, involvement in the Y, and her daily embodiment of Y values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility make her a deserving recipient of this award.
She has been a participant in the Summit YMCA’s Achiever Program for the past four years, including involvement in the Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporate Mentoring Program. Shakira also is captain of Genesis, the Summit HS Step Team, and is an active volunteer at many Y community events including MKL Day of Service, Healthy Kids Day, Summit Y 5K, and at the Summit YMCA Youth Center, where she instructs a step class to younger students. Shakira is looking forward to college in the fall at Lincoln University.
