Trains, Buses and Mall Visits!

January has been a fun and very busy month for me and the kids at ECLC’s special needs school. We got to ride the NJ Transit train and bus with the upper school students who are in TES (that means Transition Employment Skills). These students are getting ready to graduate in June. We rode the train from Chatham to Madison to go to the Stop and Shop grocery store. So many yummy things to smell!! But, the students had a lot of work to do. They practiced their Daily Living Skills by reading a shopping list, finding groceries, comparison shopping, scanning, bagging and figuring out money management. We also took the bus over to the Livingston Mall to buy gifts and eat lunch in the food court. More amazing smells! The almost-graduates take many trips like these into the community. This month we also went to Target, TD Bank and the Chatham Library, where we all had to be quiet. I hope we get to visit a Petsmart or Petco soon!

My name is Gino. I am a specially trained assistance dog from Canine Companions for Independence (CCI). CCI is a national, non-profit organization that provides highly trained assistance dogs, like me, to increase independence and enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities. Now, I am a Facility Dog at ECLC of New Jersey’s school in Chatham, N.J., for children with special needs.
