Many treatments for various skin conditions require patients to visit their health specialist more than once for follow-ups. Melasma is a dark pigmented discoloration of the skin.  Although anyone can get Melasma, it is most common in young women of brownish skin tones.   Melasma is a skin condition which may require multiple sessions to treat. The treatment and its length depend upon the severity of the condition. It is seen on the skin over the forehead, cheeks, upper lips, and nose. It is also present on both sides of the face and is symmetrical.

Women, who are pregnant, are prone to get it; and so are women on birth control pills and women taking hormone replacement therapy.  Women are more likely to get Melasma because; Melasma itself is associated with female hormones like estrogen and proestrogen.  Sun exposure is another great risk factor for discoloration, which can get worse overtime due to excessive sun exposure.  This type of skin issue can be diagnosed based upon the appearance of your skin tone at Ethos Day Spa Skin and Laser Center.

There are few treatments that can help reduce Melasma. The treatments may include creams which contains kojic acid, azelaic acid, and tretinoin which aid in improving the discoloration. Another way is through Chemical Peels which Ethos Day Spa Skin and Laser Center provides its patients with. This treatment has little to no downtime and very little to no risk factors. The use of topical steroid creams may also be recommended and in severe cases, laser treatments may be advised for the removal of dark pigmentation. Sunscreen with high SPF is also a great way to protect your skin from sun and getting darker discolorations.

A natural way to reduce Melasma is to stop the intake of birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy; including, after giving birth to a child. However, Melasma may return with future pregnancies. So, the next time you are concerned about dark areas on your skin consult a specialist at Ethos Spa because they will be able to assist you fully at their spa’s comfort zone.
