Winter Sports Update

Sport: Wrestling
Final Record: 21-3
The Scotch Plains/ Fanwood wrestling team, led by junior heavyweight, Anthony Tufaro, did not make the team state tournament, but enters the district tournament with favorites in a few weight classes. At the end of the season, SPF recorded 21 wins with only 3 losses. SPF also finished 4th at the Union County Tournament behind Brearly, Westfield, and Roselle Park earlier in the season.

Record: 12-10
At 12-10, the Scotch Plains/ Fanwood boy’s basketball team is led by Thomas Bonacum, their leading scorer. The 9 seed in the Union County Tournament, SPF has rallied to the quarter finals where they will take on the top seed, Plainfield.

Record: 9-12
The Scotch Plains/ Fanwood girl’s basketball team looks to get back to a .500 record and avoid dropping a second straight game with a win over Bridgewater/ Raritan on February 23.

After a close 2-1 win over Watchung Hills, the 7-7-2 boys hockey team looks to gain some momentum heading into the post season.

The Scotch Plains/ Fanwood boy’s swimming team is currently ranked #2 in the state and has only lost a single meet this season, which was to Pingry. SPF has made it to the sectional finals where they will take on Morristown with aspirations of claiming a NJSIAA team state title.

Record: 7-3
The Scotch Plains/ Fanwood girls swim team ended their season on a high note with a win over Princeton. Their final record was 7-3 but ended their season on a three meet win streak. They will root on the boys swim team who is ranked #2 in the state.

Joe Kania is the sports writer for the Scotch Plains/Fanwood Edition. He is an alum of Westfield High School and Bergen Catholic High School where he was a 3 sport varsity athlete, earning three freestyle state championships in wrestling in addition to earning FILA All-American honors. He attended Bloomsburg University as a Division I wrestling recruit and he is the owner of GardenStateSports.org, which is a statewide sports website covering all sports.
