SUMMIT, NJ - Summit's varsity soccer squad faced a daunting task on Thursday night as the Lady Hilltoppers (2-6) took on the undefeated Scotch Plains Raiders (7-0) on the upper turf at Summit High School. Despite being the underdog, Summit triumphed 3-2 in a closely fought match.
Only two minutes into the game Scotch Plains scored their first goal. About 10 minutes later, Summit senior Anna Johnson crossed the ball to Holly Confalone off of a corner kick and Confalone put the ball into the back of the net, knotting the game at 1-1.
At the start of the second half, Confalone was able to get the ball to Steph Ford who chipped the ball from outside the box for Summit's second goal.
Scotch Plains looked for an opportunity to tie the game. After a number of offensive opportunities they scored their second goal, making the score 2-2.
Summit Freshmen and goalie Callie Humphrey was a standout in the goal, making several tremendous saves.
Stuart Humphrey, Callie's sister, scored the game-winning goal for Summit, making the score 3-2.
"It was a really close game,” said Summit's Meaghan Celmer. “There were a couple of key moments where we really pulled through."
After the game, Hilltopper Julia McNally was very enthusiastic about the win.
"We played really well today," McNally said. "If we keep this up we should be successful for the rest of the season."
Summit is now 3-6, while Scotch Plains falls to 7-1.
