SUMMIT, NJ - Sporting pink ribbons, sticks and t-shirts, Summit’s varsity field hockey team came ready to play and defeated worthy opponent Westfield 1-0 in their annual Play for the Cure game.  On Tuesday night, the Lady Hilltoppers (5-5-1) overpowered the Blue Devils (4-7) at the Hilltopper’s home field.

Fifteen minutes into the game, Summit scored an impressive goal when Junior Julia Washburn swept the ball into the back right corner off of a rebound.

Summit dominated the game and had many scoring opportunities, but Westfield showed they had fight in them. They battled and clawed to the end, but Summit’s stringy defense prevented them from capitalizing.

Westfield played a very physical defense, anchored by goalie Khrystyna Mitchell, who had several impressive saves and kept her team in the game.

Summit junior Liz Wagenbach excelled on both sides of the field as she was successful in connecting the defense and forward lines.

The Summit field hockey team participated in the 18^th annual T.J. Martell 5k Walk for the Cure in Madison this past Sunday and so far they have raised over $1,000 for cancer research.

Summit senior Captain Abby Beier was thrilled with the win.

“We tried some new things today and it worked,” Beier said. “We’re really improving and gaining momentum as the season progresses.”

Co-Captain Annie Schmidt echoed Beier’s sentiments. Beating rival Westfield was huge, she said.

 “It felt awesome to win our Play for the Cure game,” Schmidt said. “It’s all for a great cause and I’m happy we were successful.”
