NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - On Tuesday afternoon at New Providence High School, the Lady Pioneers thoroughly routed their opponents, Brearley, ending with a final score of 69-26.
The first quarter was a complete blowout, as freshman phenom Sydney Morang, junior Casey Trezza, and senior Cassandra Squeri each contributed three-pointers to New Providence’s tally. Not only was New Providence’s offense aggressive, so was their defense, which held steadily and refused to give Brearley any possible paths to score.
Their resilience paid off, as the Lady Pioneers led the first quarter at 28-0.
In the second quarter, New Providence Coach Cap Pazdera put in a new string of girls, who played equally well against Brearley’s starting lineup. One junior in particular, Morgan Mohlman, racked up several points and contributed key defensive plays, assisting New Providence in extending their lead to 37-7 by the end of the first half.
While New Providence effectively continued their dominant run throughout the rest of the game, Brearley managed to make a small recovery in the fourth quarter, gaining a quarter-high of 13 points. However, the recovery wasn’t enough, as New Providence cinched a win at 69-26. Their victory primarily came from their stellar defense, which didn’t let up for a single second, as well as Brearley’s numerous errors throughout the game.
Even Christine Grispart of Brearley was impressed by the Lady Pioneer’s defense commenting, “They just never let up, it was a real challenge, and every point we earned we had to fight for.”
New Providence’s win brings their season record to an astounding 18-2, while Brearley drops to 9-8. As New Providence’s season begin to wrap up, their next game comes against Plainfield on Feb. 7, while Brearley will challenge Benedictine on Feb. 7.
