SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Seton Hall University celebrates Free Speech Week by inviting David Jones, former national editor of the New York Times, to speak at an event open to the public.

On Tuesday night, Jones will share highlights from his career and offer advice to those considering careers in media and communication. He will speak at 8:30 p.m. in the Nursing Amphitheater, Room 113.

“He is a big name in the journalism world; we’re fortunate to have him as a guest speaker here at SHU,” said Kyle Heim, a journalism professor at Seton Hall.

Jones grew up in a small railroad town in southwestern Pennsylvania, where he earned a BA in journalism at Pennsylvania State University. Later, he earned an MA in American history from New York University.

He became national editor of the New York Times in 1972 during the Watergate scandal, and he has covered four presidential elections. After 15 years as national editor, he became the editor of the national editions of the Times, which circulate outside the New York metropolitan area for 10 years. During that time, he also was promoted to assistant managing editor overseeing metropolitan sports and news.

Jones is a Montclair resident.
