On Moving School Elections to November

Corey L. Teague

I want to advise all Paterson residents that a community meeting will be held this Tuesday to discuss the possibility of moving the school board elections from April to November.

This community forum will he held at the International High School at 6:30. I have been given information about the reason why school boards around the state have opted to move their annual elections.

I've been told by some that this would be a fiscally responsible, and a sheer political move by others. Yet, in having conversations with those from my community, the general consensus and overall fear is that by moving the BOE elections to November, it will in fact, make them highly partisan.

While I don't have all of the facts, I must say that I'm a bit concerned with the haste being used to push this vote through. I believe their are issues of greater importance in the district that need to be addressed immediately.

Are all of the schools properly equipped with NEW books, computers & learning materials needed for our students to succeed?

Are all of the schools properly staffed?

Are the parents being treated fairly when they inquire about their children?

At this point, I don't think its prudent for us to discuss when we choose to run for election or re-election. What matters most is if we are serving our constituents to the best of our ability.

I stand with the community
