All Nations Should Be Allowed to Have Nukes

Nuclear weapons have been a major concern to many for the past century.  They have only been used once – World War II.  Over 150,000 people were killed by the two bombs launched by the United States of America, not by any of the Axis powers.  Therefore, the only country that has posed a threat to other countries by example is the United States.  No country has been irresponsible with weapons of mass destruction.  The United States acted for the sole purpose of ending World War II and protecting humanity.

The only countries permitted to possess nuclear weapons by the United Nations are the founders – France, China, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.  It is not under these countries’ authority to decide whether certain countries can develop nuclear weapons or not.  Other nations ought to have a right to nuclear weapons.  It is hypocritical to deny others the same rights.  If only five countries have them, they automatically have more power since the weapons are a threat to all other nations.

Other countries ought to have the right to be able to defend and protect themselves.  Some people may question whether certain radical countries can be trusted to possess nuclear weapons.  Radical countries such as Iran would not use them due to the fact there is too much pressure on them.  The nation is surrounded by American allies and troops.  Iran’s (as well as others’) purpose in developing nuclear weapons is strictly for self-defense.

If none of the nations possessed nuclear weapons, then perhaps it could be forbidden to produce such destructive and dangerous weapons.  Every country would be equal and safe.  However, due to a lack of trust between nations, this is not likely.  Thus, justice is not served if only a few exclusive countries are permitted to have nuclear weapons.
