MADISON, NJ - Erin Salko, an eighth-grader at Madison Junior High, has been focused on fashion design since she was 6 years old. Inspired by the television show Project Runway starring designers like Michael Kors and Heidi Klum, Erin became fascinated with drawing women’s clothing.

By age 8, she was sewing and designing fashions and accessories of her own.  At age 9, she took first place in a 4H project creating a one piece black jersey dress adorned with gold trim and chains.  She proudly displays that project and the blue ribbon she won in the room where she works.

“In the summer of 2012, I took a one-day class called Introduction to Construction at Parson’s in New York City. I learned some basics about the outline of a dress, draping fabrics and how to use dress forms.  I started working with some of my old tee shirts and turned them into something else.  I love transforming tee shirts into other things,” Salko said.

“I’ve been talking about selling my things at Bottle Hill Day for awhile.  I figure if I start a business now, I’ll have more experience to offer when I’m older.  I want to go to FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) in New York and become a fashion designer, work in a fashion house or have a business of my own. Seriously, this is really what I want to do, and ‘Seriously’ is the name of my business,” she said.

Erin can be found on Central Avenue in downtown Madison on Saturday at Bottle Hill Day. You’ll find dresses, tote bags, organizers, wristlets, small handbags, necklaces and other accessories, as well. Seriously.
