WEST ORANGE, NJ – The West Orange High School (WOHS) Girls Basketball team handily defeated Newark VoTech 51-11 in the first round of Essex County Basketball Tournament play at the WOHS Tarnoff Gym on Saturday night.
Despite a good showing from VoTech’s Aliyah Valentine with 7 points, the Lady Eagles struggled throughout the game against the Mountaineers. West Orange's crisp passing and several fast break opportunities in the first half broke the game open.
The Lady Eagles attempted to close the gap with a full court press to begin the second half. Good ball movement by West Orange, combined with second-chance rebound opportunities, gave a clear advantage to the Mountaineers. The second half was highlighted by West Orange's half-court, clock-controlling strategy.
Taylor Rowland was the top scorer for West Orange with 12 points, while Jasmin Boon-Aleandre, Amoyah Gilliam, Sidney Gordon and Samaya Mitchell scored 6 points apiece.
WOHS Girls Basketball Coach Caniece Montague was pleased with the girls’ performance.“The girls showed a lot of control and played hard,” said Montague. “They really worked the ball.”
When asked for her thoughts on the team as they moved forward in the ECT Basketball Tournament, Montague said, “I’m confident the girls can progress through the next few rounds of competition. We’re still inexperienced at the Varsity level but we’ll continue to work hard.”
The Mountaineers take on Trenton Catholic on Feb. 1.
