WEST ORANGE, NJ - The West Orange Board of Education recognized the state champion boys soccer team at the Board of Education meeting held on Dec. 16.

Each coach and player received a certificate of recognition and Assemblyman John McKeon sent letters of congratulations to all, as well. Interim Superintendent James O'Neill said that while academics are paramount, that students participating in athletic endeavors learn time management skills and are ultimately better students.

"The team approached the championship games with gusto," O'Neill said, "and they beat the best teams in Central and South Jersey."

Coach Doug Nevins said the team made up for an early season lack of chemistry, and listened to what the coaches kept telling them.

Officials at NJSIAA said they had no records of a fifteenth-seed team winning a Division 4 Championship Final, prior to the Mountaineers' success.

In other news, O'Neill presented outgoing board member Megan Brill with her New Jersey School Board Association Certification for completion of board training.

The Use of School Facilities, Item 1330, was passed on Second Reading.  The amendments to the policy will require organizations requesting use of school facilities to provide rosters with the names and addresses of participants to comply with the requirement that 90 percent of participants are West Orange residents. The CSA will have the right to waive or reduce fees when applicable, and to refuse use.

Patty Van Cauwenberge and Chris Akers of Redwood School presented the school district with a check for $15,384 from the Betty Maddalena Foundation for technology purchases for special education students in the West Orange School District.
