Wharton Music Center hosts its annual Margaret Gillen Memorial Scholarship Vocal Competition on Monday, February 25 at 7:00 p.m. at its Performance Hall located at 60 Locust Avenue in Berkeley Heights. Vocalists ages 9 to 18 will compete for prizes and scholarships including an Audience Choice award. The public is invited to attend and participate in the selection of best vocalist. Tickets may be purchased in advance for $10/adults and $5/children or at the door for $12/adults and $7/children. To purchase tickets call Wharton Music Center at 908 790-0700.

Vocalists will perform a variety of music from pop to rock to Broadway and even Mozart, Brahms, and Schubert. Broadway selections include songs from Les Misérables, A Chorus Line, The Phantom of the Opera, and My Fair Lady.

Adjudicating the performance is Broadway performer and composer Keith Herrmann. Mr. Herrmann composed the Broadway musical Romance/Romance for which he received a Tony nomination and won an Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Music for an Off-Broadway Musical. He also was composer, vocal arranger, and musical supervisor on Onward Victoria that ran both on and off Broadway. The musical conductor of Cats, Mr. Herrmann performed on its Grammy Award-winning cast album as pianist and synthesist.

The prizes and scholarships for the winning vocalists are made possible by a generous gift from Diane Lynch of Summit, NJ in memory of her mother, Margaret Gillen. Ms. Lynch’s desire to benefit others and acknowledge her mother’s love of music is realized by providing these scholarships to aspiring vocalists. While not a musician herself, Margaret Gillen enjoyed singing and listening to music. Ms. Lynch, who was a member of the Board of Trustees of Wharton Music Center during the mid-1990s, has been studying classical guitar at WMC for several years.
