BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Wharton Music Center (WMC) kicks off its fall semester with an Open House on Saturday, September 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. WMC, located at 60 Locust Avenue in Berkeley Heights, offers a wide variety of instrumental, musical theatre, drama, dance, and early childhood programs. Visitors are invited to talk with faculty members to explore what music classes best suit their children. Tours of WMC’s 22 studios including its dance studio and audio recording studio as well as its black box theater are available throughout the day.

In addition to offering private lessons in all instruments and voice, Wharton Music Center is a founding school of the Royal Conservatory Development Music Program and uses its nationally recognized music theory curriculum to round out students’ understanding of music including musicianship and aesthetic appreciation. To give new students an opportunity to try an instrument, WMC is offering introductory music classes in guitar, violin, cello, and French horn for children ages 6 to 9. Instruments are provided free for the duration of the session that classes run. New classes for adults include Adult Hip Hop and Adult Chorus and Musicianship offered in the evening.

All students who register at the Open House will receive $25 off tuition. The Fall Open House is free and open to the public.

The mission of WMC to advance excellence and education in the performing arts is readily apparent when attending one of the numerous musical theatre performances, student recitals, or orchestral concerts that occur throughout the year, showcasing the 1,300 students who study at WMC as New Jersey’s largest independent non-profit community music center. WMC offers private lessons in all instruments and voice, covering an array of styles, including classical, rock, jazz, and blues,  and group classes in musical theatre, dance, drama, choral music, music theory, audio recording, early childhood music, and music for children with special needs. Recognizing music as a vital and meaningful form of arts therapy, WMC is a qualified agency to provide services to the Division of Developmental Disabilities Real Life Choices participants. WMC is a founding school of The Royal Conservatory Music Development Program, and all WMC members enrolled in private lessons are eligible to participate in the Wharton Music Center Achievement Program.

The WMC Achievement Program is a structured approach to learning music that offers students an opportunity to measure their progress and achieve successive levels annually. Benefits include enhanced learning skills, motivation, confidence, and discipline. Each level includes achievement milestones and rewards.  Plaques and trophies are issued at the completion of each level. Assessments and recommendations are completed on an ongoing basis throughout the year.

For young, beginner musicians (ages 6-9), WMC offers introductory instrumental group classes in guitar, cello, violin, or French horn. The nine-week, 45-minute introductory classes begin Monday, September 16 and include a free instrument rental. For more advanced instrumentalists, New Jersey Youth Symphony, the orchestral and ensemble division of WMC, offers annual auditions as one of the foremost youth orchestra in the state, with eleven orchestras and ensembles.
