WESTFIELD, NJ -- Motivation, caring and catering to each individual’s goals and needs are major priorities for the staff of Get in Shape for Women in Westfield, NJ.
“The atmosphere is a very positive one,” said Manager Lisa Realmuto, “by the trainers but also by the clients.”
The gym held its grand opening, open house and ribbon cutting ceremony on Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. to noon.
Trainers here know each client by name and goal, and strive to create an atmosphere that is very unlike the big gyms in which a person can feel like an isolated island in a sea of many.
“We try to build a culture in this gym,” said Joe Maistickle who co-owns the gym, as well as another in Warren, along with his son Rob.
The boutique fitness center revolves around the philosophy of each member following the four main components of weight training, cardio, nutrition and--most importantly--accountability. If a member misses a training session, she will be called and texted by her trainers. There is a 4-to-1 member-to-trainer ratio and all personal trainers are college-certified.
“We’re very particular with who we hire,” said Maistickle.
The studio also has a certified nutritionist who comes in to help build unique diet plans with each member that include the six-meal-a-day system, portion control and the correct amount of daily protein and calorie intake. The nutritionist also helps with each member’s pre-existing medical conditions and works accordingly with each person’s medications.
Maistickle said that certain members of the Warren gym, with the approval of their personal physicians, were able to get off of their blood pressure or diabetes medications. The staff here is so devoted to ensuring correct diet plans that they will go as far as helping members healthily stock their pantries and even go food shopping with them.
Every member is weighed in every two weeks, as well as having their body mass index and measurements taken. Drastic results have been achieved by following this program and the proof is scattered all over the wall of the back office, which is covered in before and after pictures of members of the Warren gym.
“We’ve had amazing transformations,” said Maistickle. “Some women have lost over 100 pounds.”
To keep the small, family-like environment, there is a maximum capacity of 150 members per studio. Once the gym reaches that limit, a waiting list is formed.
“It’s harder to stay fit as I get older. I knew I wanted to do something with weights but didn’t know how,” said Nancy Barnes, a member who joined the gym last week. “It’s an affordable place that offers you personal training. It’s an hour, but time flies by. I love it.”
The open house offered women the opportunity to come in, check out the premises, use the equipment, work with a trainer and hear about the unique services Get in Shape for Women offers. Upon signing up for membership you are also signed up for one free training session. This offer is open to all new members.
The open house was a success, according to Maistickle, with several women receiving hands-on training that day and others signing up. Mayor Andy Skibitsky and representatives from the Downtown Westfield Corporation, The Greater Westfield Area Chamber of Commerce and the town council made an appearance for the ceremonial ribbon cutting. Get in Shape for Women of Westfield is located across from the train station at 327 South Ave.
