WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield High School Volleyball Teams played Watchung Hills Oct. 11 at the fifth annual  Pink Out volleyball tournament, organized by the Blue Devils volleyball teams and the WHS Breast Cancer Awareness Club. The event raised over $17,000 this year from sponsorships alone. Funds brought in from the 93 baskets donated by local businesses for raffle, as well as a 50/50, a serving contest, sales of donated food and sales of pink paraphernalia, including Pink Out shirts and bracelets, will be counted up over the next few days. All proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

“This is really cool. I’m kind of blown away by it,” said Watchung Hills Head Coach Evan Oftedal. “This is an outstanding event for a great cause and it’s really cool to see the community get involved. We’re pretty happy to be here.”

“It’s a fun event that gets people together. It teaches the kids to enjoy giving back, which is what you want as a parent,” said Westfield High School parent volunteer Stacey Boretz.

A special ceremony was held after the games honoring breast cancer survivors, beginning with Westfield Varsity Coach Beverly Torok:

This Pink Out was also played in memory of Westfield teammate Allie Harth.

The Westfield freshman team fell to the Warriors during the first match of the evening. Blue Devils Junior Varsity won against Watchung Hills.

The second game of the varsity match became a nail-biter when the teams became tied and again and again as Westfield gained a point or two, only to see Watchung Hills follow suit to catch up. Ultimately, the Warriors rallied to win both games, 25-14 and 25-21.

“Of course you always want to come out winning, but we played ’em tough in the second game,” said Torok. “We had a full house and really brought them in and brought awareness to the cause. That’s what it’s all about. That’s why we do this event. It’s rewarding to have the kids come out on a Friday night and support the team, and we usually have a fun time doing it.”
