WESTFIELD,NJ - The Westfield High School Varsity Girls' Soccer team defeated Summit via a penalty shoot-out, 1-1 (pen 5-4), in the UCIAC Quarterfinal Round.

“In the history of our program this is our first penalty shoot-out win,” said Westfield Head Coach Alex Schmidt. “The overtimes they owned, I’m proud of the girls for moving on to the next round of counties.”

Senior Karli Sottung of Westfield scored the first goal of the game with an assist by senior Carly Freidman early in the second half.

“It allowed us to relax a bit,” said Sottung, “to have one goal under our belt because Summit came out strong.”

For approximately the first five minutes of the game the ball never left Westfield territory, followed by a very competitive back and forth for the rest of the first half ending at 0-0.

Shortly after Westfield scored in the second half, Summit returned the goal, resulting in 1-1 by the end of regulation time. The game then went into two 10-minute-periods of extra time, during which both teams came very close to in multiple instances, but resulted in no additional goals on either side.

The game then went into a penalty shoot-out that allowed five players from each team to get a clear shot with only the opposing team’s goalie allowed to defend the goal. The first shot, made by a Summit player, was blocked and all other shots made by both teams resulted in goals. The Blue Devils won the penalty shoot-out 5-4, their first in the history of the program.

“Making history is awesome,” said Freidman, “this is a moment we’re always going to remember.”

Westfield will face Cranford High School in their next playoff game on Sat. 19 at 4 p.m. in Cranford.
