WESTFIELD, NJ — The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, in conjunction with votes from members of the media from across the state, officially closed out the Winter 2013-14 season last week when it announced the All-State selections for the season.

Among the winners are Westfield High School swimmers Caroline Baldwin (50 Free, first team); John Lindros (200 Free, third team); WHS Girls' 200 Medley Relay Team—Caroline Baldwin, Gwyn Devin, Erika Daniel and Sarah Cronin (first team); and WHS Girls' 200 Free Relay Team—Caroline Baldwin, Gywn Devin, Allie McBrearty and  Sarah Cronin (second team).

Head Coach Jeff Knight said it was gratifying to see these swimmers achieve the potential that he saw in them at the beginning of the season.

“It puts a nice cap on the season,” said Knight. “It’s good to see them get recognized for all the hard work and effort that they put in.”

He noted that the WHS Girls’ Medley Relay Team set the state record for their time.

“The Westfield Community is very proud of our swimming programs excellence,” said Westfield Athletic Director Sandra Mamary.

She noted that, at the YMCA nationals this weekend, Caroline Baldwin placed second in the 50 free, 10th in the 100 Backstroke and seventh in the 200 backstroke, and Sarah Cronin (who is part of that winning medley relay team) placed ninth in the 200 free and eighth in the 100 free.

“In many sports, the top student-athlete has an option to attend a private high school and in swimming that is not an option at WHS. The student-athletes want to be a part of this winning tradition,” said Mamary. “People don’t know the hours these student-athletes put in the pool on a weekly basis. Some are in the water before school starts, Saturday and Sunday. They have a strong work ethic and a desire to win state championships.”
