WESTFIELD, NJ — When was the last time you gave thanks for a good cup of coffee? Last year, when Westfield High School alum Daniel McGrory wrote home from a tour in Afghanistan, he told his family and friends a good cup of “joe” was nearly impossible to find.

McGrory’s younger brother, Luke McGrory, along with other WHS students organized a fundraiser that year called "A Cup of Joe for our G.I. Joe.”

“The idea came to me as my dad, a WWII vet, always referred to to coffee as ‘Joe,’” said Westfield High teacher Thomas Hornish, who also played a significant role in the creation of this fundraiser.

At the conclusion of the last year’s fundraising, $700 dollars had been collected and 60 lbs. of coffee were sent to American troops in Afghanistan.

This year, a similar inspiration resurrected “A Cup of Joe for our G.I. Joe” after Westfield High School's assistant principal, Dr. Derrick Nelson, who is stationed in the Middle East, wrote home and mentioned a similar complaint.

Luke McGrory and another student, Sebastian Trott, creators of the Wounded Warriors club, began once again raising money to give back to the men and women fighting for our country. After raising $780 dollars, they recently received an anonymous donation of $600 and will be sending 120 lbs. of coffee from Ahrre's in Westfield to Dr. Nelson and his company in Qatar.

Want to help the students send more? Visit Ahrre's Coffee Roastery at 104 Elm Street in Westfield to donate. The store will contribute an additional pound of coffee for every 10 pounds donated. Donations will be accepted from now until Wednesday, Dec. 4.
