WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield Public Schools announced today that school personnel, including building principals, assistant principals and front office staff from all 10 Westfield Public Schools attended security training Aug. 14 in preparation for the 2013-2014 school year.

According to a press release from the district, Michael Weissman, assistant superintendent of pupil personnel services and lead coordinator of the district’s  emergency preparedness committee, said the purpose of this training is “to provide Westfield Public School front office staff with concepts and ideas for maintaining a secure and safe environment, and for improving observation, detection and reporting skills.”

Procedures were discussed in dealing with various emergencies and in implementing appropriate responses, including lockdowns. School personnel also were reminded to be aware of suspicious behavior and to be vigilant when visitors ask to enter the buildings.

“The safety of our students and staff is of primary importance, and learning techniques and responses through these training sessions is a valuable part of our school security program,” said Superintendent of Schools Margaret Dolan, who attended the training.

Similar training is planned for the district’s teachers.
