Westfield Resident Confronts Intruder, Trespassers Caught in Unoccupied Home

July 9, 2014 8:15 p.m.

Mr. David A. Cruz, 21, of Garwood was arrested on the strength of one outstanding ATS warrant issued by the Westfield Municipal Court ($106.00 bail) pursuant to a traffic stop on Central Avenue, near Sussex Street. Mr. Cruz was transported to Westfield Police Headquarters for arrest processing and released after posting the requisite bail.

July 9, 2014 9:35 p.m.

A resident of the three hundred block of First Street reported a burglary to two motor vehicles, including a theft of seventy dollars ($70.00) from one of the vehicles, while they were parked, unlocked, in the driveway of the residence between 9:00 p.m. on July 8, 2014 and 9:00 a.m. on July 9, 2014.

A resident of the three hundred block of First Street reported a burglary and theft from a motor vehicle that was parked and unlocked behind the residence between 9:00 p.m. on July 8, 2014 and 9:00 a.m. on July 9, 2014. The unknown actor(s) stole approximately six dollars in cash.

July 9, 2014 11:59 a.m.

A resident in the 600 block of Roosevelt Street reported a theft from their motor vehicle. The vehicle was parked in the driveway and left unlocked when $220.00 was removed from the glove compartment. There are no suspect(s) at this time.

July 10, 2014 12:31 p.m.

A resident of the 600 block of Leigh Drive reported an act of criminal mischief to their vehicle. Resident stated that her side window was smashed overnight during the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. by an unknown object. Nothing appears to be taken from the vehicle.

Tony Valasquez, 24, of Elizabeth was arrested at Westfield Police Headquarters on the strength of outstanding arrest warrants issued by the Westfield, Mountainside, and Cedar Grove Municipal Courts. Mr. Velasquez was processed and held in cell #2 in lieu of posting bail.

July 11, 2014 2:12 p.m.

Lonnie Moore of Plainfield was arrested at the Somerset County Jail on a Westfield warrant in the amount of $834.00. Moore, 61, was unable to post bail and was transferred over to Union County Jail.

Report of a theft in the 1200 block of Summit Avenue. Victim reported that the actor took approximately $1,070.00 worth of jewelry from her residence.

A resident of the 400 block of W. Broad Street reports a theft of his bicycle while it was left unsecured in their backyard. The bicycle is described as a black-colored Schwinn Mountain bicycle with a white line on the frame. The approximate value of the theft is $250.00.

A resident of the 400 block of W. Broad Street reports that unknown suspect(s) entered their vehicle while it was parked in the driveway and removed approximately $34.00 in U.S. currency. The vehicle was apparently secured at the time of the incident, but sustained no damage.

A resident of the 400 block of W. Broad Street reports that unknown suspect(s) entered their vehicle, while it was parked in the driveway and removed approximately $10.00 in U.S. coins. The vehicle was apparently secured at the time of the incident, but sustained no damage.

July 11, 2014 8:25 p.m.

Francis Preite, 51, of Westfield was arrested for driving while intoxicated pursuant to an investigation in the 200 block of E. Broad Street in Westfield. Preite was transported to Headquarters, processed and placed in cell due to the fact that he failed to contact a sober adult to pick him up, as per John’s Law.

July 12, 2014 3:18 p.m.

A resident in the 200 block of W. Dudley Avenue reports a theft of his lawnmower between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on July 12, 2014 while it was on the sidewalk in front of their residence. The lawnmower is described as a red-colored Troy Built 420 Series with a black-colored grass catch bag. The approximate total value of the theft is $250.00.

July 12, 2014 10:54 p.m.

Officers responded to the 1000 block of Prospect Street in the report of unauthorized subjects inside his dwelling. The residence is currently under construction and the owner stopped by to make sure the property was in good order. When the resident entered the house, he heard noises inside and immediately yelled out announcing his presence. The resident observed two suspects flee out the back window as he notified police. Westfield Police Department units arrived on scene and an interior check of the premises was conducted. Meghan Bachmann, 20, of Westfield was located by officers inside the house; additional responding units located the other two suspects in the area of Woodmere Drive and Brightwood Avenue. Joseph Fogel, 22, of Westfield and a 16 year old male subject also of Westfield. All three suspects were placed under arrest and transported to Westfield Police Department for processing. The suspects were charged with criminal trespass, a fourth degree crime and released. The juvenile was turned over to his father.

July 14, 2014 12:16 a.m.

Jose Morales-Ruiz, 28, of Plainfield was arrested in the 200 block of W. North Avenue during a police investigation and charged with obstructing the administration of law and resisting arrest. Morales-Ruiz was transported to Westfield Police Department, processed and released after posting $1,000.00 cash bail.

July 14, 2014 3:37 p.m.

A resident in the 800 block of W. South Avenue reported a burglary to their residence. The resident returned home at 1:45 p.m. and confronted the subject as she was walking up to her rear door. The suspect described as a black male, tall and thin build, with short hair and some facial hair, LSW: an orange or gray tee shirt and dark pants. The suspect fled the area heading west on the railroad tracks. A search of the area by Westfield Police Department units yielded negative results for the suspect. At the time of report the victim did not know if anything was stolen from the residence.

July 14, 2014 10:26 p.m.

A green-colored TD Bank card was found on the sidewalk in front of 110 E. Broad Street. The card was placed in the Westfield Police Department temporary evidence locker.

July 15, 2014 6:19 a.m.

A resident of the two hundred block of Maryland Street reports a possible act of criminal mischief to their vehicle that was legally parked on the street. Resident reports that between the hours of 7:00 p.m. on 07/14/14 and 6:19 a.m. on 07/15/14, unknown actor(s) damaged his rear driver side door with an unknown object causing a dent.
