The Holocaust Council of Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ (Federation) is co-sponsoring the annual Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) commemoration on Monday, April 8. Marcy Lazar of Westfield chaired the regional committee that planned the event.
A professionally staged reading from Windows, the 2012 winner of the Holocaust Council of Greater MetroWest’s Shoah Stories on Stage contest, will highlight Federation’s regional commemoration in the Wilkins Theatre of Kean University, 1000 Morris Ave., Union, beginning at 6:45 p.m. Busing to Kean will be available from the Alex Aidekman Family Jewish Community Campus in Whippany and JCC MetroWest in West Orange.
Written by Melissa Schaffer of Montclair, Windows is based on the actual experiences of a local Holocaust survivor. Schaffer was moved to write the play after her son participated in the Holocaust Council’s Twin With a Survivor program.
The reading will be performed by professional actors under the direction of the Jewish Plays Project founder David Winitzky. The commemoration is being sponsored by the Holocaust Council and Kean University’s Holocaust Resource Center. Students age 8-21 attending the event are eligible for a prize drawing for an iPad, courtesy of the Continuity of Student Education Initiative. Sign-language interpretation will be available.
The program is free and open to the community. RSVPs are encouraged by visiting www.jfedgmw.org/yomhashoah or calling (973) 929-3194.
