Westfield Memorial Library Hosts Two Plays by NJ Shakespeare Theatre
Monday, June 23, 2014 • 1:44pm
The Westfield Memorial Library is pleased to present “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” on Wednesday, July 9 at 7:00 p.m. and “The Libation Bearers” on Wednesday, August 6 at 7:00 p.m., both shows performed by The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey Next Stage Ensemble. The library is located at 550 East Broad Street.
When starry-eyed young lovers and zany would-be actors cross paths with mischief-making fairies in a magical forest, the result is one of the world’s most uproarious comedies. “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is the ideal “first Shakespear” for younger audiences, and a riotous roller-coaster ride for the whole family. This production is directed by Daniel Roberts and based on an original production conceived by Brian B. Crowe.
“The Libation Bearers” by Aeschylus is a gripping Greek classic that has family secrets, powerful gods and bloody revenge colliding with one another. Many years after the brutal murder of his father, Orestes sneaks home to enact his revenge.
With the aid of Electra, his sister, a plot is laid to ensnare those responsible for the death of Agamemnon, the king who famously conquered Troy. This tale of the House of Atreus is directed by Awoye Timpo.
In residence on the campus of Drew University in Madison, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey is one of the 22 professional theatres in the state. One of the leading Shakespeare theatres in the nation—serving 100,000 adults and children annually—it is New Jersey's only professional theatre company dedicated to Shakespeare's canon and other classic masterworks. Through its productions and education programs, the company strives to illuminate the universal and lasting relevance of the classics.
