Westfield High School Principal Reaches Out to Parents After Student’s Death
Friday, January 18, 2013 • 1:40pm
WESTFIELD, NJ—Just before 11 a.m. this morning, Westfield High School Principal Peter Renwick sent a letter to parents of children at the school via email regarding the death Wednesday of Freshman Mark Hollaway. Parents yesterday complained that they had no information from the school regarding Hollaway's death and were surprised when their children arrived home in shock and grief.
The letter reads:
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Yesterday, our school community learned of a great loss and many were impacted by the unexpected off-campus death of one of our students. Our staff and counselors came together to support the student’s family, friends and classmates. This was our primary goal.
Throughout the day, we were in contact with the district’s Chief Medical Inspector and our local Board of Health who are awaiting details and confirmation from the State. As you probably know, this sad situation has been reported by the media. With respect for the family and our responsibility to confidentiality, we cannot disclose details, even if information has appeared in the news or social media.
Our children are our most precious gifts and we have lost one of them. We hold in our hearts those who have been affected by this tragedy as we grieve this loss together.
