WESTFIELD, NJ — Members of the Westfield High School Boys' Varsity Baseball team start this season with the team’s surprising 2013 postseason run on their minds. The Blue Devils lost the state sectional championship game last year to Eastern 8-1.

Westfield got the opportunity to participate in the four- team group 4 state tournament after defeating Northern Hunterdon 3-1 in the North 2, Group 4 sectional tournament championship. The Blue Devils won their state sectional tournament as the 10th seed. It was their second sectional championship in three years.

Looking forward to the upcoming season, the team is hoping to build on its success. The Blue Devils have many returning players from last year who have the experience of playing in huge games.

“After winning the county championship and reaching the state finals, we shouldn't be nervous,” said Westfield's head coach, Robert Brewster.

“In reality, last year we were young and inexperienced. This year, we are an experienced team,” Brewster said. He noted that during the offseason his players worked very hard and diligently.

Westfield’s returning leadoff hitter, senior Anthony Perconte, who batted .362 last spring, is a player to watch this season, along with his teammate senior Mike Androconis, added Brewster.

The Blue Devils are currently ranked #7 in the State in the Star Ledger's Pre-Season Top 20. Westfield is feeling very prepared and exited to begin the regular season despite only getting the opportunity to play in one pre-season game due to the recent poor weather.

Westfield opens their 2014 campaign today, April 1, on the road versus arch-rival Scotch Plains-Fanwood at 4 p.m.
