WESTFIELD, NJ — Following a hotly contested opening night victory over Cranford on Friday, Westfield High School’s boys varsity basketball team continued a spell of good form with 61-40 victory over local rival Scotch Plains-Fanwood on Dec. 21.

Sophomore guard Parker Hess and senior forward David Kane led the scoring with 12 points each on Westfield’s end.

“The guys were hungry to play,” said Blue Devils coach Daryl Palmieri. “They were able to attack the rim so that plays started opening up.”

Westfield had the lead from beginning to end. The team started with a 10-point lead on the way to a 15-5 lead after one period. Westfield continued to cruise defensively, limiting Scotch Plains-Fanwood to just 18 points at halftime. This defensive prowess was evident throughout the game.

“We were able to move the ball well and attack it on the defensive end. The team was really able to execute defensive assignments,” explained junior forward Sean Elliott, who pitched in 10 more points for Westfield.

Westfield’s ability to create turnovers, more than 30 in the game, made for a comfortable space between the two teams going into halftime. When both teams continued, Scotch Plains-Fanwood found a bit of an offensive spark from Josh Acosta, who finished the game with 10 points. The halftime deficit of 16 points was still too much to reconcile for Scotch Plains-Fanwood as Westfield scored 26 points in the second half.

“We didn’t play well today,” said Scotch Plains-Fanwood junior guard Christian Lisojo. “We just turned the ball over way too much.”

Coming off a victory of its own, Scotch Plains-Fanwood will look to rebound for its next game on Monday on the road against J.P Stevens.

“It was a nice win for Westfield. The guys just have to keep their heads up and realize that this a long season,” said Raiders coach Dan Doherty.

Westfield will seek to continue its early season form as it carries its 2-0 record to Ridge next Friday.
