Westfield Gets “Park by App” Parking Spots

WESTFIELD, NJ—On Nov. 27, the Westfield police department began implementing new technology for 85 parking spaces that lets users pay by cell phone—either by calling in or using the free ParkNOW! app for iPhones and Androids.

These “park by app” spots can be found along the railroad track on the south side of the Westfield train station and for those spaces on Waterson Street controlled by pay station.

“It’s very user-friendly,” said Westfield Police Chief David Wayman. “Everything is right there at your fingertips.”

For a convenience fee of 40 cents, users can use the technology to skip the line at the pay station and easily add more time to their spot from anywhere, eliminating the need to “run to the meter” in the middle of a meal or a shopping trip.

Those who use the app can even view a timer that counts down, while those without the app can call to find out how much time they have left.

“We’re always looking for new technological advances or other improvements that we can make for the convenience of the users of the parking spaces,” said Wayman.

If the idea catches on, the technology could be put in place at all pay-station parking spots in Westfield within the first half of 2013 at a minimal cost to the town, according to Wayman. (There is no cost for the “pay by app” spots the town has now.)

“It all depends on the feedback that we get from the users,” said Wayman.
