WESTFIELD, NJ – At least one Westfield family is enjoying the abundance of snow that has fallen this winter.

The Cass family, who reside at 826 Summit Ave., have created a 22-foot tall snowman on their front lawn -- complete with four-foot tall hat, a flowing striped scarf and mittens -- that has been causing drivers to slow down and marvel recently.

“If life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” said Malissa Cass. “If life gives you snow, make snowmen.”

Cass and her husband, Jeff, have been making giant snowmen with their daughters, now ages 26 and 28, for several years, but this one tops previous creations by several feet.

“My husband and daughters have been playing in the snow for a long time,” Malissa Cass noted. “For the last five years or so, the main activity is building this huge snowman. The neighbors all get involved and even a son-in-law helps out now.”

The couple estimates that it took between 40 and 50 hours to complete construction of this snowman, which is made up of three cylindrical forms held together by chicken wire covered in plastic. As snow is added inside the wire, one or two people work compacting it.

The higher levels of the snowman are made by filling five-gallon buckets of snow and carrying them up a ladder to be compacted. A pole through the center of the snowman gives those working higher up stability.

Malissa Cass made the hat, scarf and mittens for the snowman while Jeff made the eyes, nose and arms.

Despite the warmer weather and rain expected to move in over the next couple of days, Jeff and Malissa Cass are hopeful that their snowman will surivive until temperatures cool off again early next week.
