WESTFIELD, NJ — Seniors Christine Ferraro and Catherine Higgins were awarded scholarships from the Westfield Education Association (WEA) May 22 at a special ceremony at Westfield High School.

Ferraro, a WHS student, was awarded the WEA scholarship based on academic achievement, school activities and community service. Ferraro plans to attend Cabrini College in Radnor, PA, to study exercise science. Her mother, Maureen Ferraro, and sister, Caitlin Ferraro, are both teachers at Westfield’s Jefferson Elementary School.

Higgins is the recipient of the Barry Judd Memorial Scholarship, given in memory of Barry Judd, who was a well-respected World Language Teacher at WHS from 1974 to 1992. The award is granted to a WEA member’s son or daughter who will be attending college in the fall. Higgins will graduate from Watchung Hills Regional High School and plans to attend Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA. Her mother is Donna Higgins, a Spanish teacher at WHS who shared her classroom with Barry Judd during the beginning of her career.

This year's scholarship committee included Moira Abraham, Roosevelt Intermediate School’s Librarian and Chairperson of the WEA Scholarship Committee; Carole Stavitski, WHS School Nurse; WHS School Counselors Faith Qualshie and Jan Fine; Edison Intermediate School Art Teacher Daniel Black; and Jefferson Elementary School fourth-grade teacher Elizabeth Shull.

Funds for these scholarships are raised through donations of the Westfield Education Association.
