WESTFIELD, NJ— The Westfield varsity football team beat Plainfield 34-0 at the 109th annual Thanksgiving Day game. The Blue Devils played strong, scoring five touchdowns with a hat trick by senior running back Eugene Rawles.

According to senior Holden Ehrhart, the win was a team effort on Westfield’s part.

“Defense did what they always do and offense did what they always do. We dominated on both sides of the ball,” said Ehrhart.

Westfield scored early in the first quarter by Rawles, rallying the team and setting the tone that continued throughout the game.

The game picked up in the second half starting with a huge kickoff return by senior David Kane, followed with another touchdown run by Rawles. Westfield scored again shortly after when junior Jackson Simcox recovered a fumble within yards of the end zone.

Senior Dylan Elliot brought the score up to 27 with a touchdown off a pass by senior Chris Hogge. Ending the game, Rawles completed his hat trick with a final touchdown run.

The Blue Devils achieved what they set out to do that day, finishing their season on a high note.

“This game, we just wanted to leave everything out on the field one last time and, for us seniors, we wanted to end our Westfield careers with a win,” said senior Dylan Elliott.

On Nov. 27, The Blue Devils and the Plainfield Cardinals won the spot for Best High School Football Rivalry in New Jersey in contest being run by USA TODAY.  Voting for round two in the contest begins on Monday, Dec. 2. For more information and to vote, click here.
