CLARK, NJ - All Westfield's Lil Scott wanted to do was kick the soccer ball into the corner to set up an opportunity to win the game on Saturday in the first overtime.

But to Scott's amazement the ball kept going and going and got by Summit goalie Callie Humphrey, hitting the back of the net and giving the Lady Blue Devils a 3-2 victory over the Summit Lady Hilltoppers in the Union County Tournament semi-finals on Saturday night at Johnson High School in Clark.

"I saw an opening (at the goalie) and it was a really good pass (from senior forward Sarah Freer)," said Scott, who admitted she wasn't shooting the ball on goal. "It was more about placing the ball."

For Scott it was one of her big first varsity goals. A sophomore last season, she was mainly on the junior varsity as a freshman. "We worked so hard for this," said Scott. "I feel really good and I'm proud of our team."

Scott's goal that came with four minutes remaining in the first overtime at Johnson High School gave Westfield (13-4-1) another shot at a Union County girls soccer title.

The Blue Devils will look to win their first county championship since 2006 and also seek its 19th county title when they face top-seeded Scotch Plains-Fanwood on Saturday at Kean University. Scotch Plains defeated Cranford, 2-1, in double overtime at Johnson High School after the Westfield victory.

For Summit (9-9-1) it ended a Cinderella run in which the Lady Hilltoppers were looking to win the school's first county championship in the sport.

Not many felt that the Hilltoppers would be in the UCT semi-finals after starting the season at 2-6. "I think what got us here was the belief in each other," said Poller.

Still for Summit it was bitter sweet. While it was a moral victory getting this far in the UCT, coming so close to pulling the upset was a difficult pill to swallow. "You can't fault the effort of my team," said Summit head coach Mike Poller. "The effort was there and we just have to refocus (for the state playoffs)."

With a perfect feed from Westfield junior midfielder Karli Sottung, Blue Devils junior Gianna Devito smacked it by Humphrey giving Westfield a 2-1 lead with three minutes left in regulation.

And it appeared that the Blue Devils had punched a ticket to the finals, but Summit came back and had a couple of opportunities.

As it turned out Summit's Bryhn Johnson was tripped up by a Westfield player in the box as both teams were heading back toward the Summit end.

The result was a penalty kick and Hilltoppers top striker, Holly Confalone, smacked a shot by Westfield keeper Hannah McKenzie that ended regulation, which tied the game at two and sent it into overtime.

In overtime both teams had a chance, but it was Scott who pulled the trick for the blue and white of Westfield.

In the first half the two teams had exchanged goals and they both came only a few minutes apart.

First, Westfield Emily McBain bounced a shot by an oncoming Humphrey, 30 yards in front of the net to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead with 19 minutes remaining in the first half.

But Summit came back and took advantage of a mistake in the box on the Westfield side and Hilltoppers' Stephanie Ford made them pay with a goal to tie the game at one with 16 minutes left in the first half.
