Thursday, September 26, 2013 • 3:45pm
Musa Abu-Kaf, one of Israel’s top six teachers of the year, will be the guest of Phyllis Bernstein and Robert Kuchner of Westfield as he visits schools in the area.
Kuchner is chair of the Israel and Overseas Committee of Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ (Federation), and a member of Jewish Federations of North America’s Executive Committee and Jewish Agency for Israel’s Audit; Bernstein is a member of Federation’s Israel-Arab study group and the Jewish Agency for Israel’s Social Venture Fund. Inspired by Jewish values, Federation helps Jews and others in need locally and in Israel, and builds Jewish community and identity.
Every year as many as 2,000 teachers from across Israel are nominated and compete for Moreh Shel HaMedinah – Teacher of the Year.
From Be’er Sheva (in the Negev), Abu-Kaf is currently teaching fifth and sixth graders in an experimental science program at Gabim, a co-existence school which attracts Bedouin and Jewish students from Be’er Sheva. The school’s science department focuses on the environmental interests of Bedouin and Israeli society, with a special interest in Bedouins, plants and natural resources from the desert.
