WESTFIELD, NJ — Parents, students and community members wore blue and gathered around the Westfield Board of Education Building on Elm Street Monday in a gesture of solidarity while negotiations over teachers’ pay took place inside.

“This is not a protest,” said Karen Mortenson, a parent of former Westfield School District students. “This was to show support for students. We truly just gathered to show solidarity for our negotiation team.”

The crowd of about 100 people gathered at 6:15 p.m. and left at about 7:15 p.m. after the leader of the team negotiating on behalf of the teachers came out to tell the crowd that their efforts had been acknowledged. The crowd responded to with applause while the team and board continued to negotiate inside.
