WESTFIELD, NJ — At the start of the 2014 season, members of the Westfield High School boys’ varsity golf team are confident in their skills as they hope to improve and surpass last year’s accomplishments to ultimately achieve victory.
One of the highlights of last season for the team was winning the Union County Conference meet—Westfield finished its 2013 season with a final record of 14-3. This year, the team hopes to remain one of the top in the state.
“Last year we had very high expectations for our team, but we did not have the season we hoped for,” said Senior Captain Justin Slavin. “We had four seniors graduate last year, and now we have some new faces on our team, but there are still the same expectations for us. The only difference is, [this year] we are going to get the job done.”
Junior Jared Geoghan said the team is confident in its starting lineup.
“With that said it is definitely our goal this year to take back the county championship from Governor Livingston and ultimately make our return to the tournament of champions,” said Geoghan.
The players are confident in their ability this year with returning starters Slavin, junior Jonny Lee, Geoghan and sophomore Justin Lankler.
“It’s a matter of how much we put in and how much trust we have in each other,” said Geoghan.
The team’s next scrimmage will be Apr. 1 against Montclair Kimberly Academy at Echo Lake country club and its first match of the season will be on Apr. 3 at Governor Livingston.
