WESTFIELD, NJ - The Westfield boys varsity basketball team defeated Scotch Plains-Fanwood, 73-54, on Friday night, which was dedicated to honoring one of the all-time greats of SPF basketball lore.

During the halftime break, Bryan Dougher, Class of 2008, had his number retired by Scotch Plains-Fanwood. Dougher is the all-time leading scorer for the Raiders and the all-time leading scorer for Stony Brook University. He is the fourth alumnus of Scotch Plains-Fanwood to have his or her number retired.

Dougher led SPF to a Group 3 state championship in 2008.

Dylan Elliot and Parker Hess each scored 10 points in Friday's game for Westfield. Leo Ramos led the Raiders in scoring with nine points. Scotch Plains-Fanwood hit three buzzer-beaters in the game, two of which were half-court shots by Dan Lopez and Emendo Thomas. Chris Gibbons hit a deep three at the end of the third quarter.

“What we need to do is learn not to get down on ourselves when we are behind in the beginning of the game and to keep fighting before it gets out of hand,” said Scotch Plains-Fanwood player Andrew Voysest.

The Blue Devils contained the Raiders to only seven points at the end of the first quarter. The Raiders could not handle the full-court press by Westfield, causing them to turn the ball over on most of their possessions in the first half.

Scotch Plains-Fanwood fell into a 26-point deficit midway through the second quarter. The Raiders tried to fight back into the game when they went on a 15-4 run from the end of the first half to the start of the third quarter, but in the end lost the game by a large margin.

Westfield’s record is now 6-5, while Scotch Plains-Fanwood’s record drops to 7-4. The Raiders travel to Rahway on Jan. 21 for their next game, and the Blue Devils play Gov. Livingston on Jan. 21.
