WESTFIELD, NJ — Among the topics discussed at Monday’s Board of Health meeting was the availability of flu vaccinations. It was the first Westfield Regional Board of Health meeting in 2014—the first two meetings of the year were cancelled due to inclement weather.

Laura Scanlon, public health nursing supervisor, expressed concerns about flu vaccinations to her fellow members. Scanlon said that resident turnout for flu shots in the fall (the recommended time to get a flu shot) was not as high as in previous years. She said that it was in the colder months of December and January that residents began to schedule times to get their vaccinations.

“It’s not too late to get a flu vaccination,” Scanlon said in response to a board member questioning the relevance of flu shots at this time of the year.

“There has been little about the flu in the press this year,” noted Board of Health President Dr. Lawrence Budnick.

According to Scanlon, there are still hundreds of vaccinations available for local residents. For a flu vaccination, schedule an appointment with Scanlon and staff by calling 908-789-4070, extension 4074.
