WESTFIELD, NJ - Capital and maintenance projects and Kindergarten through fourth grade social studies revisement presentations were given at Tuesday's Westfield Board of Education meeting.

A 2014-2015 Capital and Maintenance Projects presentation was given by board member and district Business Administrator Dana Sullivan. Most of the funding for next year’s projects will come from the maintenance reserve, capital reserve and state grants, she said. Of the 62 grants the board applied for, it received 36.

“We accepted all the grants, but cannot execute them until the remaining funds are raised,” said Sullivan.

The total amount from state grants recommended for acceptance was over $1.1 million. The majority of the funds will go toward projects such as air-conditioning in classrooms and hallways, security and boiler replacements.

Social Studies Supervisor Andrea Brennan gave the board a presentation on the revisions she made with the K4 Social Studies Committee on not just social studies courses but language arts as well.

Brennan discussed the four main strands of social studies: civics, geography, economics and history. Within the four strands the committee focused on the three standards of American history, world history and active citizenship.

“A lot of these ideas came straight from the state’s common core curriculum,” said Brennan.

Chronological thinking, spacial thinking, presentation skills and critical thinking were also included in the K4 revisions. Cultural universals as well as expanding the students’ world views was also top priority for the committee.

There was also a short presentation given by assistant superintendent Paul Pineiro on the implementation of the new district website. The district will start using Edline, a learning community management system, this spring and has been training teachers and administrators how to use it since last summer.

“We’ve had a very good year of everyone getting where they need to be,” said Pineiro.

The next Westfield BOE meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 8.
