WESTFIELD, NJ - A full presentation on the Genesis Student Information System was given at the Westfield Board of Education meeting on Feb. 11.

Genesis is a web-based student data recorder for New Jersey schools. The Westfield School District implemented the system in the 2010-2011 school year. During the presentation administrators from all levels of education--intermediate, secondary and high school--discussed different aspects of the program and how they differ at various levels of education.

“For the high school students, we do take attendance for each class," said Mary Asfendis, assistant-principal of Westfield High School

Summaries of a student’s absences and tardies are reported in the Parent Portal of Genesis. More in-depth summaries are available for the high school level students than the lower level students because they switch classes. Any individual class missed is marked as a “cut” unless the student is marked as being in the health office, guidance counselors’ office or math resource center by scanning their ID cards.

Gradebooks are also accessible through the Parent Portal. While the majority of grades are posted for elementary students, all graded assignments are posted for students at the intermediate and high school levels.

Class scheduling is also done conveniently for intermediate and high school students through Genesis.

“Genesis does a great job at maximizing the efficiency of scheduling,” said Asfendis.

There was also a presentation given  on the Kindergarten Wrap Around Program. In cooperation with the main YMCA, the Wrap Around Program offers more educational opportunities for students that attend half-day kindergarten. Students are involved in science-based activities, reading and writing and free choice activities. In its first year there are currently 40 students attending, with room for that number to double in the next year.

The Westfield High School Gymnastics team received certificates recognizing them as winners of the state sectional title. More on this story to come.

The board also approved the accepting of three gifts donated to the Fine Arts Department. Madeleine Lee donated a Klaus Mueller Etude Cello, case and bow, the Westfield Theatre Guild donated $5,000 for a new light board for the WHS auditorium and the WHS PTSO donated $2,000 to the Theatre Department.

“We thank you all very much for those gifts to the school system,” said board president Richard Mattessich.

The next Westfield BOE meeting will be held on March 4.
