WESTFIELD, NJ — The Westfield Blue Devils varsity baseball team continued their path toward a state championship with a 5-0 victory against the Bridgewater-Raritan Panthers Tuesday. Senior Brad Demartino pitched a shutout, recording six strikeouts in the process.

“I know these are my last few games pitching for Westfield,” said the star lefty. “So I’ve been putting everything I have into my starts.”

The Blue Devils jumped ahead in the first inning with an RBI single from catcher Michael Ionta before scoring three times in the second inning by way of a two-run triple from first-baseman Calvin Robershaw.

Although the Panthers did manage to advance a man into scoring position in the fifth inning, De Martino remained poised throughout.

“We just had a very hard time consistently hitting the ball to score runs,” said Kevin McDermott of Bridgewater-Raritan, one of the three Panthers to record a hit in the game.

The Blue Devils were able to capitalize once more in the fourth inning, but the team still made its share of errors. Mental mistakes could have proved costly had the Westfield pitching not been so effective.

“We played well enough on offense to win today,” Westfield coach Bob Brewster said. “But we need to make better base running decisions. We lost about three runs with poor base running.”

The final score of the game reflected Westfield’s strong pitching and defense throughout the season, led by senior pitchers Michael Androconis and Demartino.

Westfield moves on to group four sectional final at home against Millburn on Friday.
