WESTFIELD, NJ — Continuing an incredible pitching performance in the state tournament, senior Elena Scarano reflected on her past four years playing softball for Westfield High School.

“Being a part of a senior class that has been playing together for four years has been so rewarding and has motivated all of us to work hard to make our last year memorable,” said Scarano. “By setting goals for ourselves in the beginning of the season, we have been able to focus on every game and practice to the best of our abilities.”

Scarano has attained a personal record of 14-2 and received the Banyasz Brothers Memorial Award for Most Valuable Scholastic Softball Player at the 78th Annual Hot Stove League Baseball Dinner in February. Despite her incredible personal achievements, Scarano said she is extremely proud of her team.

“On the pitching mound, I have felt so confident to have such a strong and consistent defense behind me, and solid offense to earn runs,” she said.

At the start of the season, Coach Caitlin MacDonald had predicted Scarano was a player to watch. Now, after the team has attained the county championship, Scarano is pitching in the state tournament.

“Being back-to-back county champions was a huge accomplishment for us, and we are looking forward to continuing this streak as we head toward the state quarterfinals versus Linden,” she said Wednesday, before Westfield defeated Linden 14-4.
