Westfield Area Y Keeps Children's Skills Sharp This Summer

Many students can’t wait to close their books and get out of the classroom when summer break arrives.  It’s a time for them to explore the outdoors and build friendships while on their bikes, at the pool and on the athletic field.  In addition to exercising their bodies, it’s important for kids to keep their minds active during the summer months.  A lack of summer learning opportunities puts children at risk of losing academic skills and knowledge.

Let the Y help keep your child’s skills sharp this summer at the new “Skill Sharpener Camp” for children in grades 2-6 at the Main Y Facility, 220 Clark Street in Westfield. By offering summer learning loss prevention programs and integrating literacy exercises into youth programming like camp, the Y helps children stay mentally engaged throughout the summer.  “At the Y, we believe all youth deserve the chance to fulfill their potential.  We help children and teens succeed through a holistic approach to youth development – fostering their cognitive, physical and social emotional well being,” states Marty Collett, Westfield Area Y Youth, Teen & Camp Services Director.

This camp provides the academic support your child needs to kick-off the new school year combined with the physical activity time necessary for healthy brain and body balance.  NJ state-licensed teachers guide three 30-45 minute lessons in math, reading and writing, the subject areas prone to “summer learning loss.”

The half day program will include indoor/outdoor physical activity time, snack time, brain teasers and games.  Campers will also have recreational swim time twice a week. Skill Sharpeners Camp will be held for two weeks this summer, August 11th-15th for children in 2nd-4th grades and August 18th-22nd for children entering 5th and 6th grade.

Don’t delay, register your child today.  Please visit www.westfieldynj.org for more details.

The Y is the nation’s leading nonprofit committed to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Financial assistance is available for those who qualify.
