SUMMIT, NJ - Eighteen men and women, members of the West Point Jewish Chapel Choir, will perform at Temple Sinai April 4-6, as part of Temple Sinai’s Artists-in-Residence program.
During their residency at Temple Sinai, the cadets will perform traditional Jewish songs, contemporary music and West Point favorites at two free public events. They will also visit Temple Sinai Religious School classrooms and interact with the students.
Performances are scheduled during regular Shabbat services on April 4, beginning at 7:30 p.m., and in concert April 5, at 8 p.m. A pre-performance dessert reception, to which the public is invited, will begin at 7 p.m.
The cadets, who will arrive in town the afternoon of April 4, will be housed throughout the Greater Summit area in private homes of Temple members.
The cadets’ visit to Summit is sponsored by the 2014 Henry Dorfman Memorial Artists in Residence program, instituted in 2006 by Carolyn Dorfman and her husband Dr. Gregory Gallick, in memory of her father. They are members of Temple Sinai and Ms. Dorfman is the founder, artistic director, and choreographer of the Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company. Through the years, eminent Jewish scholars have appeared at Temple Sinai under the auspices of the program. This year, the program is aimed more at culture than at scholarship.
The West Point Jewish Chapel Cadet Choir has performed extensively throughout the United States. In December, 2012, they appeared at the White House singing "Rock of Ages", as part of a Hanukkah celebration.
Members of the public are invited to attend these performances without charge, but reservations are required, and donations will be accepted. Reservations can be made by e-mail via firstname.lastname@example.org, email@example.com, or by calling the Temple office at 908/273-4921. extension 10.
