Sunday, January 13, 2013 • 2:45pm
WEST ORANGE, NJ - The following information has been provided by the Township of West Orange to provide important information to the community:
Flu Shots Available at West Orange Health Center
The Health Department staff is available to speak with residents Monday-Friday 8:30-4:30 pm and will make every effort to assist you with your concerns or refer you to the proper department or agency.
There has been an INCREASE IN INFLUENZA ACTIVITY this January, 2013, as reported on the news. The West Orange Health Department continues to provide Flu Shots to West Orange and Essex Fells residents over 18 years of age as long as supplies last. Vaccinations are being given at the West Orange Health Center located at 10 Gaston on the first floor of the John P. Renna, Jr. House adjacent to the municipal complex. Please call the Health Center at 973-325-4130 to be sure a nurse is available during the times of 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm Monday – Friday.
The flu that is being presented in emergency rooms and physicians’ offices is being reported mainly as the H3N2 virus which appears to cause more severe flu symptoms than in normal seasonal flu. The H3N2 is one of the strains indicated in this year’s vaccine and is the best defense to stop the flu or lessen the effects in some cases. It is not too late to receive the vaccine as it is the first method of prevention.
People over 60 years of age, pregnant women, young children and those with chronic illness or compromised immune systems are more at risk for severe symptoms of the flu. Those in close settings, such as college dormitories and those that are caregivers for an elderly person or infant should also consider getting the flu vaccine for the protection of the one being cared for.
Those having Medicare as a primary insurance carrier have no cost for the vaccine. Those having Medicare as a secondary insurance belonging to an HMO and all other adults will be charged a $25.00 fee. Cash, check or money order accepted.
Parents should contact the family physician or pediatrician for children under 18 years of age and pregnant women should contact their obstetrician. CONSULT YOUR PHYSICIAN it you think you have the flu.
