West Orange Snowfall, Closures, and Other Information

WEST ORANGE, NJ - As the Department of Public Service worked non-stop, the current snowfall total in West Orange as of midnight was 11.0, several inches more than predicted by the National Weather Service. An additional two inches could fall during the night.
Snow began falling in early morning as commuters headed to work and students to school. West Orange Public Schools had already called for a half day and Seton Hall Prep was closed. By noon, several businesses and schools, including Montclair State University, were planning to close early. Gov. Christie declared a State of Emergency for New Jersey and Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo declared a State of Emergency for Essex County.
Roads were treacherous with off and on road closures throughout the township as DPW and the County cleared roadways. At times it seemed as though they could not keep up with the rapid snowfall. Reports of standstill traffic exiting Newark, as well as highways congested with drivers attempting to head home at the same time, caused long commuting delays with hazardous road conditions.
Several areas of the township did not receive mail delivery. Shoprite at Essex Green and Whole Foods Supermarkets closed early and the township jitney did not run in the evening.
Wednesday is expected to be mostly cloudy in the morning with a high of 16 degrees. Wind chills of -12 can occur. Expect wind gusts up to 25 mph.
Through the evening, several closures and delays for Wednesday, Jan. 22 were reported.
