WEST ORANGE, NJ - Despite the early start to today's snow, which began at dawn, the West Orange Public School District remains open.
In a message sent out to parents this morning, West Orange Superintendent James O'Neill said:
"PARENTS ARE REMINDED THAT THE DISTRICT HAS TO MAKE A CALL ABOUT SCHOOL BY 5:15 AM.
PARENTS ARE REMINDED THAT YOU MAY DECIDE TO KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME – THERE WILL BE NO PENALTY FOR ATTENDANCE TODAY. BUSES CANNOT TRAVEL ON EAGLE ROCK AVE."
The Alternative Press was unable to get through to the Board of Education via phone, but the Superintendent responded by email, saying:
"Every expectation is that the storm will move out early afternoon and the roads will be clear at that time. If we have to reroute kids on the way home we will do that."
Many parents have chosen to keep their children home and student attendance in the Elementary Schools in particular, are low.
Driving conditions on Eagle Rock Avenue are currently treacherous and drivers are asked to proceed with extreme caution. Mt. Pleasant Avenue near Pleasant Valley Way is currently closed and the Department of Public Works is en route to assess the situation.
The Alternative Press will continue to provide updates as they become available.
