WEST ORANGE, NJ - The West Orange School District will be holding its 2014 Diversity Conference Series beginning on Feb. 5 at Central Office Room 203, 179 Eagle Rock Avenue, at 7 p.m.

In a statement issued to The Alternative Press, Interim Superintendent James O'Neill described the Diversity Conference Series as well as its goals:

Four years ago the Board commissioned a study on diversity in the West Orange schools.  The study determined that the relationships amongst students of different ethnic, religious, racial and economic backgrounds was very good, and while teachers overwhelmingly had a positive relationship with all students that the district should make an effort to do several things.

Two of the items identified were first, make an effort to increase the number of minority staff so that more students have teachers and role models that look like the student population; and second, make an effort to have an ongoing dialogue about race as well as maintain efforts to make teachers sensitive to racial issues in classroom lessons and discussions.

In February, March, and April of 2013 our discussions also focused on intergenerational issues. This generated some very healthy discussions and plans that would foster opportunities for senior citizens to have the opportunity of interacting with West Orange High School students. We plan to continue those discussions this year.

The Diversity Committee is open to all members of the West Orange Community. Part of our agenda is a discussion of what is; part of the discussion is focused on identifying issues we should address; and part of the discussion is focused on actions we can take.

West Orange High School Principal Hayden Moore is scheduled as one of the Diversity Conference Series facilitators.
