The West Orange Recreation Department’s - Footsteps for the Exceptional Child, is proud to sponsor a Summer Camp for children (PreK to 5th grade) with mild to moderate learning and developmental challenges.

Parents of children with special needs often find it difficult to find recreational programs for their children. Most community based programs are not designed to accommodate children with special needs. Skill development, sportsmanship and teamwork are just as important for a child with physical and developmental disabilities as they are for their typically developing peers.

When asked about this new program Candy Myrick, the Footsteps Program Coordinator, said “This summer camp is a win-win for both the parents and the participants.  It will be hosted at Pleasantdale School, therefore, if the child attends the West Orange School District’s ESY (extended school year) program, they do not have to leave the building.  Students will have lunch and then participate in daily enrichments activities, such as arts & crafts and science, under the supervision of district instructional aides and teachers.”

The West Orange Recreation Department - Footsteps for the Exceptional Child offers year around recreational activities to children with special needs and disabilities.  Footsteps provide a structured, supportive environment that enable children with special needs to grow and learn while having fun. Physical activity increases a child's ability to cope with stress and anxiety. Footsteps proudly sponsor recreational programs which build mental health, well-being, self-sufficiency and confidence.

Registration for the Summer Camp ends on May 30, 2014.  If you have any questions about the summer camp or any of the Footsteps programs you may contact Ms. Myrick at
973-325-4150 or footsteps@westorange.org.
