West Orange Rec Annual Achievement Luncheon Brings Out Community

WEST ORANGE, NJ - Members of the township and sports communities turned out to to honor three long time volunteers and game changers at the Annual West Orange Recreation Achievement Luncheon on Saturday, February 23. Gerry Huegel, Town Architect, Steve Quirk, outgoing Mountaintop League President, coach and trustree, and Andrew Mazurek Sr., PAL Baseball coach, were recognized for their commitment to the kids and programs that benefit them.

Bill Kehoe, Rec Director, welcomed the crowd and introduced Joe Pelose, Superintendent of Parks, who presented Gerry Huegel with his award.  Huegel has been the town's architect for the past 22 years and renovated the Toby Katz Center, made improvements to several fieldhouses, O'Connor Park, the bleachers at Suriano Stadium, and the Ginny Duenkel Pool.

Pat Doyle of Mountaintop introducted Steve Quirk, who has been involved in MTL soccer programs for several years. He said that his goal was to help provide "a premier community for kids to play sports in."

Andrew Mazurek Jr., a current PAL Coach, then introduced his father, Andrew Mazurek Sr., and spoke of his Dad's commitment to teaching kids with no baseball skills how to play.  In addition to regular teams, Mazurek also coached several summer All Star baseball teams.

Mayor Rob Parisi, his wife Sheila, Victor and Erin Cirilo, Jerry Guarino, Sandra Mordecai of the Board of Education, PAL officers and MTL officers, were on hand to recognize the achievements of fellow West Orange Community members.
