WEST ORANGE, NJ - West Orange Police provided more information regarding the carjacking late Friday night that turned into a high speed car chase, crash, and helicopter search in the Gregory area.

On Friday night, March 1,  at 11:11 pm, a woman was approached in the parking lot of St. Cloud Health Care, located at 5 Brook End Drive.  A black male in dark clothing, described to be between 20-30 years old, brandished a handgun and demanded the woman's wallet.  The woman told the assailant that it was in her car.  He forced her to her car, took her keys, and took off in the vehicle.

Police were alerted to the carjacking and the car was spotted traveling on Northfield Avenue. Police pursued the vehicle, which turned right on to Gregory avenue, spinning into a resident's driveway and coming to a stop.  The assailant fled on foot.

Police units attempted to set up controls around the perimeter to box the suspect in.  Police dogs were brought in, and a helicopter was requested to provide lighting in an attempt to capture the suspect, who had leapt over a fence and out of view.  The police were unsuccessful at capturing the suspect, who remains at large.

The woman's vehicle was recovered, and her wallet was left intact in the vehicle.  The suspect's handgun was also found in the vehicle.  The investigation is ongoing.
